TOFC and Well Cars/Photo Resources – The Model Railroad Benchwork Store

A collection of various TOFC and Well Cars for reference use on your Model Railroad. We’ve added brief descriptions to each highlighting some of their unique features.

Prototype photos can be an invaluable resource when you are trying to make your Model Railroad as realistic as possible, or even just give you some ideas for equipment you want to add. They can be especially helpful as a reference for weathering your rolling stock, or if you are modelling an older time period or era.

DTTX 890148, double stack articulated flat car — DTTX 890148 is an articulated 3 car double stack container well car. Of interest is the road grime on the sides, predominantly dear the ends where the wheels kick it up.

DTTX 767772 double stack container flat car — DTTX 767772 is in the typical yellow paint scheme for the leasing company known as Trailer Train. This is part of a 3 car well car set.

DOUBLE STACKS AND ARTICULATED FLAT CAR — The low carrying platform of the well car design can be clearly seen here. The advent of these cars was necessary due to the many railroad tunnel clearance issues associated with stacking containers for more efficient movement.

BNSF WELL CAR — A three unit container well car, this one is owned by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad.

BNSF ARTICULATED FLAT CARS — A BNSF articulated TOFC set with some bright orange trailers on them.

BNSF ARTICULATED WELL CARS — The center car of this three-car set of articulated TOFC flat cars shows the shared truck assembly. There are also some good scenery modeling ideas in this photo that you can use.

TTRX 371074 ARTICULATED FLAT CAR — This closer view of TTRX 371074 shows the truck coloring better. Various browns could be used to accurately simulate this and is a good first step in weathering.

TTX ARTICULATED FLAT — A closer view of a semi-trailer on this 53-foot articulated TOFC car.
