How Helix Builder™ Works (and Why It Saves You Time)
Helix Builder™ was created to solve the two most common helix frustrations:
- Design uncertainty (grade, turns, footprint, clearance)
- Build complexity (repeatable parts, consistent assembly, accurate cuts)
Step 1: Enter your key design inputs
- Imperial or Metric
- Rise per turn (your clearance target + allowance)
- Maximum grade target
- Radius and roadbed width
- Segments (12 minimum; higher counts support elongated/oval and return-loop styles)
- Turns (including fractional turns in 1/12-turn increments)
Step 2: Review the outputs
- Total Rise (overall helix height)
- Total Run (total track length estimate)
- Maximum Clearance (confirm equipment clearance)

Is Helix Builder™ just a calculator?
No. Many online tools stop at grade/turn math. Helix Builder™ is a build-ready design system that generates a cut list and is supported by shop drawings and assembly guidance.
Can I build something besides a basic circular helix?
Yes. Helix Builder™ supports:
- Standard circular helixes
- Elongated / oval helixes (more run = lower grade if you have space)
- Return-loop concepts (advanced configurations with guidance)
- Multi-level entry/exit approaches (includes photo examples)
What grade should I use?
Lower is almost always better. If your grade is higher than you’d like, the fastest improvement is usually increasing the radius and/or choosing an elongated (oval) configuration to increase total run.
Does it help me estimate track length?
Yes—Helix Builder™ outputs Total Run, which makes it easy to estimate total track requirements before you start.
